India’s WTC 2025 Final Chances Boosted by NZ-ENG Penalty

India’s WTC 2025 Final Chances Boosted by NZ-ENG Penalty: India’s cricket team is currently touring Australia for a five-match Test series. The Indian team has already made a strong start by defeating Australia in the Perth Test by a margin of 295 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. The second Test match is scheduled to be played at the Adelaide Oval on December 6th.

In this article, we will discuss the complete scenario of India qualifying for the WTC final. This comes after the recent deduction of 3 WTC points from the NZ-ENG team due to a slow over rate during a match.

India’s WTC 2025 Final Chances Boosted by NZ-ENG Penalty

England has defeated New Zealand by 8 wickets in the first Test. This result has slightly eased India’s path to the WTC final. However, the news got even better for Indian fans.

Because due to a slow over-rate offense in the Christchurch Test, the ICC has penalized both New Zealand and England with 15% of their match fees and deducted 3 points from their WTC tally. This has significantly benefited the Indian team.

Before the Perth Test, India needed to win the series 4-0 against Australia to comfortably reach the WTC final. But now, even a 3-0 series win will be enough for them to qualify. This means India only needs to win at least 2 of the remaining 4 Tests.

Complete scenarios for India to qualify for the WTC final

  • If India wins the series against Australia by a margin of 3-0, 4-0, 4-1, or 5-0, they will definitely qualify for the WTC final.
  • Even with a 3-1 series win, India will have a good chance if Sri Lanka defeats South Africa in the second Test.
  • A 3-2 series win against Australia will also keep India’s hopes alive, but they will need Sri Lanka to draw at least one match in their home series against Australia.
  • If the series is drawn 2-2, India will still have a slight chance if South Africa defeats Sri Lanka in the second Test and Sri Lanka manages to win the series against Australia.
