Khaleel Ahmed Profile:
Coming from a very humble background, Khaleel Ahmed is a classic rags-to-riches story. The boy played cricket against his father’s will and accepted getting beaten for it as well. He enrolled in a cricket academy without his parent’s consent. Khaleel performed exceptionally well for the Rajasthan Under-14 side. Consistent performances helped him get into the Indian side. Being a left-arm provides an edge to Khaleel over other bowlers because of the angle he creates.
Early life:
Born in Tonk, Rajasthan, Khaleel learned the art of bowling with Tennis ball. His father, a compounder, wanted his son to be a doctor and not play cricket but little Khaleel persisted with his passion. He joined Cricket academy in Tonk without informing his parents. His coach, Imtiyaz Khan, sent him to Jaipur.
Playing for Rajasthan Under-14, he took 26 wickets in four matches. In 2015, he played for India U-19 and captured 13 wickets in five games.
Road to the Indian team:
Khaleel made his first-class debut for Rajasthan in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy but had already impressed the selectors with his performances in white-ball cricket for his state. Delhi Daredevils bought him in 2016, but he did not play in the IPL till 2018. However, he learned a lot from DD staff and then-coach Rahul Dravid.
After a successful 2017-18 domestic season, Khaleel was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the eleventh edition of the IPL for a massive three crores INR. So far, he has played in 10 matches and has 19 wickets in the T20 tournament.
In September 2018, he was named in India’s ODI squad for the 2018 Asia Cup. He made his ODI debut for India against Hong Kong on 18 September 2018.
It was followed by Khaleel’s inclusion in the T20I squad for India’s home series against the West Indies. He made his T20I debut for India against the West Indies on 4 November 2018. Previously, he had registered his best ODI bowling figures of 3/13 against West Indies in October 2018 at Mumbai.
