Washington Sundar Profile
Washington Sundar, the 18-year old burst on the scene courtesy of an injury. Washington’s all-round performance in the 2016 TNPL helped him earn a place in Rising Pune Supergiant squad. In his debut season, he had to step in to fill the void of R Ashwin, who was ruled out of the tournament. Washington impressed with his bowling and kept performing in the domestic cricket consistently. Now he makes regular appearances in the Indian team.
Grabbing the opportunity
Washington first appeared on the cricket horizon via 2016 Under-19 World Cup. He was then selected in the Tamil Nadu squad for the Ranji Trophy. The all-rounder also contributed in the inaugural Tamil Nadu Premier League in 2016. So when R Ashwin was ruled out of the IPL 2017, Pune franchise signed him as the like-for-like replacement. Washington grabbed the chance with both hands and impressed everyone with his bowling. He took eight wickets in 11 matches at an economy of 6.16.
Further growth
Post the IPL2017, Washington truly owned the second edition of the TNPL. With one century and three fifties, he topped the run-charts of the season. Taking 15 wickets, Sundar was the second-highest wicket-taker of the 2017 edition. He was the player of the tournament despite his team losing in the final. This sensational performance propelled the all-rounder towards the national T20I squad.
India debut
Washington played his first and only ODI till date against Sri Lanka at Mohali on December 2017. He did not bat and took only one wicket while conceding 65 runs. He immediately debuted in T20Is for India as well. However, it was not noteworthy.
The off-spinner was then selected in T20I tri-series played in Sri Lanka in March 2018. He took eight wickets in five matches. Washington was named player of the series in the winning campaign. Despite the award, he fell out of selectors’ liking. Washington Sundar received another chance in the Caribbean recently but did not perform as expected. He currently represents Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
